How Women Become Political 10/07

Speakers and panelists include
    * Gloria Steinem, feminist, activist, author
    * Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts
    * Ayanna Pressley, Boston City Councilor at-Large
    * Ambassador Swanee Hunt, Chair, Political Parity
    * Kerry Healey, President, Babson College, co-Chair, Political Parity
To be a part of politics, must be about politics everyday…must breathe, sleep, eat it
To be political:
            -take a trip to Washington
-create a great political foundation at school
            -work on a campaign
            - get a mentor, who’s involved with you and is experience (more than you)
-Don’t try to work your way up, just do it (pertaining to high seat holding)
-politic doesn’t need to be done right now; it can be a certain part of your life
Challenge:
-          ensure every girl feels empowered to be daring; don’t settle; take a chance

Key:
-it’s an advantage for women to stand up for themselves
            - Republican and Democratic women run at same rate but republican women barely make it out of primaries

Why don’t women run?
            -depends on office
What difference do women make in politics?
On avg, more collaborative, practical, more productive, introduce more law, care more about content; our fight to obtain seats motivates us…”We don’t have our masculinity to prove.” – have diff. optic/perspective on everything we try to develop
How do we embrace personal and political power? (as to no seem too ambitious)
-          Do not EVER tolerate attacks
